What is an Animatic?
An animatic is a crucial step in the animation production process, serving as a rough, preliminary version of an animated sequence or film. It acts as a blueprint, providing a visual representation of the timing, pacing, and composition of the scenes, helping artists, animators, and directors plan and visualize the animation before fully committing to the production.
Why are Animatics used?
Animatics, first and foremost, provide a visual representation of the entire animation or film, allowing the creative team to see how the scenes will flow together. This visual blueprint aids in the planning of shot sequences, action timing, and overall composition, guiding the final production’s direction.
One of the primary advantages of using animatics is the time and cost savings they provide. Producing a full animation can be a time-consuming and resource-intensive process, and animatics allow filmmakers to identify potential problems or flaws early on. They can save time and money on rework and revisions during the production phase if they catch problems early on.
Animatics can also be used by the creative team as a communication tool, allowing them to share their ideas and vision with stakeholders, clients, or team members. Because everyone involved can visualize and discuss the project using the animatic as a reference, feedback and collaboration become more effective.
Furthermore, animatics aid in fine-tuning the animation’s timing and pacing. Animatics provide a sense of how the scenes will play out in real-time by combining rough visuals with temporary audio or dialogue. This ensures that the animation flows smoothly and evokes the story’s intended mood and emotions.
Animatics are invaluable in the realm of storyboarding for evaluating the effectiveness of the storyboard. Before moving on to full animation, filmmakers can assess whether the storyboard adequately communicates the intended narrative and identify any gaps or continuity issues that need to be addressed.
Aside from animation, animatics are used in live-action films to pre-visualize action sequences or complex scenes. Before filming, directors can experiment with camera angles, movements, and special effects, streamlining the planning and execution of the shoot.
Animatics can also be used to pitch animated projects or film ideas to potential investors, studios, or distribution companies. They effectively convey the concept and vision in a visually engaging manner, making it easier to secure project funding and support.
How to make animatics on KROCKIO? – A Step-by-Step Guide
KROCK.IO is an innovative online platform that allows users to create stunning animatics using an interactive board. This article will guide you through the process of using the board effectively to craft captivating animatics that will impress your audience. Let’s dive into the step-by-step guide on how to make animatics on KROCKIO.
1. After logging into KROCKIO, you will be redirected to the dashboard.
2. Click the “Create a new project” button, open it, and add the “Board” step using the “New” button.
3. Drag and drop several pre-prepared images into the board, and frames will be created on their basis, allowing you to set the duration of the scene, and text fields – for example, dialogues, scene descriptions, light, camera, and so on.
You can begin working with the board without images by creating frames and filling in the available information. For example, you can use a prepared (according to our template) csv or xlsx file and import text fields for all scenes, saving time on manually entering all of this data.
You can also use our AI Storyboard tools to write a script, that will generate a description of the scene for you and then generate all or some of the images based on these descriptions. To avoid a blank sheet, we recommend using this tool for the primary, draft version.
4. You have several display options for your board:
“Grid view” – viewing the general view of the board in it is convenient; it provides the most information in a compact form.
“Table view” is useful for editing textual information, structuring it, and assigning tags.
“Single view” – image editing, viewing large images.
“Animatic” – setting timings, viewing the board in video mode, adding subtitles and a watermark, which can then be exported to a video and saved for yourself.
The information in each of the views changes dynamically; you choose which mode is more convenient for you to work in, but we recommend using each of them for the corresponding stage of creating animation.
5. Provide feedback on individual frames and resolve contentious issues, thereby improving the final product’s quality.
6. In animatic mode, you can load audio files and switch between them on the fly, allowing you to select the best one.
7. You can also control the addition of a watermark in the animatic mode if necessary.
8. Another important function is the ability to add subtitles to the animatic. It allows you to choose a text slot for the final video’s subtitles, which can be downloaded separately.
9. Animatic can be downloaded as a finished MP4 video file with or without subtitles and, if desired, a watermark. Subtitles are also available as a separate download.
